SPEAKERS
ANDRÉ CARPENTIER, MD, FRCPC, FCAHS
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
University of Sherbrooke
André Carpentier is an internationally renowned expert in the field of diabetes, molecular imaging and postprandial fatty acid metabolism. Over the past two decades, his laboratory has perfected a series of innovative molecular imaging methods to elucidate the role of fatty acid metabolism in the development of cardiometabolic dysfunctions and in the anti-diabetic mechanisms of bariatric surgery.

Holder of the Canada Research Chair in Molecular Imaging of Diabetes, Dr. Carpentier is also the founder of the Research Network on Cardiometabolic Health, Diabetes and Obesity (CMDO). Funded by CIHR and the Canada Foundation for Innovation, his work has contributed significantly to the understanding of the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes and has resulted in more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, including several dozen publications in prestigious journals such as Nature Communications , Cell Metabolism , Journal of Clinical Investigation , Diabetes and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism .
ANDRÉ TCHERNOF, PH.D.
School of nutrition,
Laval University
Dr André Tchernof is the director of the research axis in obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolism at the University Institute of Cardiology and Pneumology of Quebec. Holder of the Research Chair in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Laval University, Dr. Tchernof is interested in the dysfunction of adipose tissue associated with obesity as well as the effects of bariatric surgery.

Dr. Tchernof's work has led to the publication of over 260 articles and is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Recently, his laboratory seeks to unveil the cellular and molecular determinants of the metabolic effects of bariatric surgery.
EMILIE MONTASTIER, MD, PH.D.
University lecturer,
Toulouse Purpan Faculty of Medicine,
Toulouse-III-Paul-Sabatier University
Dr. Montastier was head physician in the endocrinology department at Larrey Hospital before obtaining a Ph.D. in Physiopathology at the University of Toulouse.

Dr. Montastier is interested in the use of genetic and molecular biomarkers to study the roles of fat cells in the development of metabolic dysfunctions associated with obesity. Another part of her research program focuses on the complications of bariatric surgery as well as the nutritional monitoring of patients after surgery.

Funded by the Francophone Diabetes Society, her research has been published in several high-impact journals such as Diabetologia , Clinical Nutrition, Diabetes Care and Nature medicine .
ISHWARLAL JIALAL, MD, PhD
Assistant Dean of Research,
Professor of Physiology, Metabolism and Clinical Diagnostics
California Northstate University College of Medicine, United States
Pr. Ishwarlal Jialal is an international authority on metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Pr. Jialal was the Director of Chemical Pathology, Associate Director of Clinical Pathology and Director of Clinical Biochemistry and Human Metabolism at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He later joined the UC Davis Medical Center as Director of the Laboratory for Atherosclerosis and Metabolic Research. After retiring as Distinguished Professor at the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Pr. Jialal now serves as Assistant Dean of Research at the California Northstate University College of Medicine.
With an H-Index of 103, Pr. Jialal is a prolific scholar and has authored more than 560 articles in some of the most prestigious journals, including Diabetes Care, NEJM, Circulation, Nature Reviews, and The Lancet. His research on diabetes and cardiovascular disease has received countless awards and has been funded by the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Pr. Jialal also served on the Editorial Board of Diagnostic Endocrinology and Metabolism, Clinical Chemistry, Atherosclerosis, Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Pr. Jialal was also Editor-in-Chief of Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders and Contributing Editor of Nutrition Reviews. He also served on the Grant Review Panels of the ADA, the JDRF, and the NIH.
